It was back in 1998 when I, Bea Hegner, founder and owner of Kunst am Babybauch, produced my first belly cast. At first it was trial and error with the special plaster material… mannequins and family members had to pose as models. I was fascinated by this new way to keep a memory forever in a 3D piece of art.
Being myself mother of three, I could easily imagine that such belly casts could become popular, especially with soon-to-be parents. With it, it became possible to keep an everlasting memory of the round baby belly.
I kept working on this idea and managed with much effort and persistance to make my hobby into my profession.
What had been popular in our neighbouring countries for a while, took a while longer in Switzerland and only became popular in the last years. All of a sudden DIY plaster print sets were on offer on baby-shop shelves.
At the beginning, I saw this new development as a huge competition, as I had also sold DIY sets, but in the meantime, I have come to understand that this was a big chance for me: I get flooded with self-made belly casts, which often don’t turn out as nice as the parents would like them to be and end up in my workshop for the final finish.
Thanks to my many years of experience I manage to transfer the most catastrophic belly cast into a piece of art. I am aware of the sentimental value of each cast and treat each one with the highest respect and care, yes, I put a lot of heart and soul into them. A big thank you goes to all of my customers who entrust me their very special memories.
